Tullibardine is situated in an area prized for its water so much so that three breweries operated there in the 12th century. King James IV purchased beer from one of these breweries in 1488 and the site on which that brewery stood is the Tullibardine distillery. It was founded in 1949 by the noted distillery architect, William Delmé-Evans and C.I. Barret. Delmé-Evans used the old brewery buildings to house the distilling equipment. Tullibardine was bought by a private consortium in 2003 and they a have dramatically re-invented it, building a new visitor centre and a restaurant named 1488. Although the new owners will have to wait until 2014 before whisky from the new production will be ready, as the distillery was mothballed in 1994 and existing stocks are depleting.
