The appearance of Tomatin could give you the impression that it was one of the big industrial distilleries built in the 1970s but it was actually built in 1897. The character of an old traditional distillery has disappeared and from 1956 a major expansion happened at Tomatin. A one point in 1974 it had 23 stills operating, producing 12 million litres of alcohol per year and was Scotland’s largest distillery. The Tomatin Distillers Co. who had been owners since 1909 went into liquidation in 1985 and the Japanese companies Takara Shuzo and Okara purchased it a year later making it the first Scottish distillery to be acquired by Japanese interests. The Japanese company, the Marubeni Group acquired Tomatin in 1998 and downsized the distillery, decreasing the number of stills to 12. Tomatin has a 4-star visitor centre which attracts about 30,000 visitors per year.
