Royal Brackla was founded on the outskirts of Nairn in 1812. It was the first distillery to be given Royal warrant, after King William IV had taken particular delight in its whisky. The famous blender Andrew Usher was a sales agent for Royal Brackla in the 1840s and when he started his blending company in a decade later he used Royal Brackla as the main malt whisky. So it can be said Royal Brackla was one of the first malt whiskies used for producing blended whisky. In 1997 United Distillers completely refurbished the distillery and built a new a stillhouse. The only remaining building from the 19th century is the distillery office. Bacardi purchased Dewar’s from Diageo in 1998 and with it became owners of Royal Brackla.
