John Johnston founded Lagavulin in 1816. It sits on the southern coast of Islay, close to Dunyvaig Castle. Lagavulin is Gaelic for “the hollow where the mill is”. The white washed Victorian buildings and their twin pagoda toped chimneys offer a stark contrast to the sea battered shoreline and the Dalradian quartzite of the hills beyond. The distilleries richly peated water runs down the brown burn from the Solan Lochs in the hills above. Together with the heavily peated malted barley, from the Port Ellen maltings, it gives the whisky a distinctively smoky character.
