Knockdhu comes from the Gaelic ‘Cnoc Dubh’ which means black hill. Knockdhu is unique in the way that it is the only distillery started by the Distillers Company Ltd (DCL), the company that dominated the whisky industry for most of the early to mid 20th century. It was built in 1893 at Knock a town a few miles from Huntly. The purpose of the distillery was to supply whisky for the Haig's blend; it did this up until it was closed in 1983. The current owners, Inver House purchased the distillers in 1988 and released the first official bottling two years later. In 1993 the product name was changed to Ancnoc to avoid confusion with another Speysider, Knockando. The product range consists of a 12 year old and some limited editions. Older versions and independents are mostly bottled as Knockdhu.
