The distillery was founded in 1881, and despite a rebuild in 1886 and an extension in 1975 remains very little changed. The distillery has had several silent periods, the last of which was in 1998, but its future was secured in 2000 after it was bought privately and is now in full working order. The original Victorian equipment has been carefully restored and renovated and is run in the traditional way. No computers are used! It is one of the last distillery’s left with an open mash tun.
