Benromach distillery was founded in 1898 by Duncan McCallum and was designed by the top distillery architect Charles Doig. Production was halted as soon as it started in 1900 as the Pattison Crash froze the whisky industry. It was bought by DCL in 1953 and refurbished and modernised in 1966, which included installing an oil-fired boiler in the still house. Benromach is believed to be the first distillery to have done so. The floor maltings were abolished in 1968 and malted grain was bought in. Gordon & McPhail bought Benromach in 1993, after a ten-year period of closure, and was formerly opened in 1998 by HRH Prince Charles.
