Aberfeldy has been operating continuously since its inception interrupted only by the two world wars. It is the staple malt in Dewar’s blended whiskies such as White Label. The visitor centre, which opened in 2000, is very impressive not least because of its excellent interactivity. The displays are heavily biased towards the Dewar family’s blended whiskies but there is also a separate tour of Aberfeldy distillery on offer. Aberfeldy was founded by a true whisky baron, Thomas ‘Tommy’ Dewar. He was the youngest son of the firm’s founder John Dewar, and an indefatigable marketer of its products. Dewar, who was very interested in motoring, is said to have been the third registered owner of a car in the UK, preceded only by HRH The Prince of Wales and Sir Thomas Lipton, both of whom were personal friends. There are only two official bottlings from the owners Bacardi at the moment: a 12 year old and a 21 year old. Independents offer a wider range.
