Like many of Scotland’s older distilleries the Macallan distillery has changed hands many times since it was opened in 1824 by Alexander Reid. In recent years it has come under the control of the Glasgow based Edrington Group who also own Highland Park, Glenturret and blends The Famous Grouse and Cutty Sark. They use bore holes dug deep underground to draw spring water for the distillation process.

It is of course world famous, it was reported in 2009 that Macallan single malt was second only to Glenlivet in volume sold across the globe. Of course quantity is not always a good indicator of quality, however Macallan whisky is enjoyed by so many that they are clearly getting much right. The volume produced of course means that you can buy Macallan whisky relatively easily, their core expression 10 year old and 12 year old are very popular on the site. Macallan do invest in creating limited edition and specialist single malts too, these are often not widely available and we are fortunate to hold a number of these too.

Macallan has something of an identity crisis, it is officially a Highland distillery although it has always classed itself as a Speyside distillery, indeed older bottles still carry the Speyside provenance. Wherever it is from don’t let that distract you from enjoying Macallan whisky, because much of it is exceptional.
