Laphroaig is Gaelic for “the beautiful hollow by the broad bay”. In 1815, the brothers Alexander and Donald Johnston built the distillery on a remote spot on the south coast of Islay. In 1847, Donald Johnston died after falling into a vat of partially made whisky, leaving the distillery to be run by Walter Graham of neighbouring Lagavulin. Water runs from the Kilbride Loch down granite hill and through large peat bogs to the distillery. Laphroaig still do their own floor maltings and operate a peat kiln. It has been known that on a stormy night the sea has spilled into the warehouse and soaked the casks, giving Laphroaig a salty, iodine taste. Whether you call it Scotch, whiskey or whisky Laphroaig holds a unique place in the hearts of Islay single malt lovers.
