The Rate brothers, John and George, built a distillery called Milton, in 1825. They applied for a license in 1834 and re-named the distillery Glenkinchie. The name ‘Kinchie’ derives from the de Quincy family whom owned the land centuries before the Rate brothers. The distillery lies in East Lothian, named the “Garden of Scotland” after its perfect conditions for growing barley and farming. Robert Burns described this part as “the most glorious country I have ever seen”. It was re-furbished in 1890 after the company was privately sold. In 1981, the still house was converted to steam heating. Described as “The Edinburgh Malt”, Glenkinchie has a sweet, subtle quality typical of Lowland malts.
