Glen Ord was founded in 1838 at the Muir of Ord, north of Inverness. Original owners of Glen Ord had rocky fortunes as Robert Johnstone and Alexander MacLennan both went bankrupt and Alexander Mackenzie saw his new still house burn to the ground days after building it. Glen Ord was acquired by Distillers Company Limited (DCL) in 1925 and they went on to substantially expand and develop Glen Ord, including upgrading its maltings. The maltings are large mechanical drums and they malt enough barley to supply the rest of the Diageo’s distilleries. A former mash man is also said to haunt the distillery.
