Archibald Campbell founded the Isle of Jura distillery in 1810. It is situated near a cave where illicit distilling had been practiced since the 1600s. It was leased to James Ferguson in 1875 and rebuilt in 1884. In 1901 a dispute between Ferguson and the landowner Colin Campbell saw the distillery close and the distilling equipment was dismantled and sold. In 1920 Colin Campbell removed the roofs of the distillery to avoid paying tax and it was left to ruin. It was rebuilt in 1960 by Scottish and Newcastle Breweries and extended in 1978 to 4 large stills. The Gulf Stream means the climate is mild and the remoteness attracted George Orwell to the island where he wrote his famous novel 1984.
