Buy Brora OnlineBrora, initially known as Clynelish until 1968 was built in 1819 by the Marquis of Stafford, 1st Duke of Sutherland. It was constructed in the time of the Highland Clearances for the purpose of hindering or stopping the small scale illicit distilling that was happening in the area. A new Clynelish distillery was built next door in 1968 with nearly three times the capacity. For nearly a decade they operated as Clynelish A (‘New’ Clynelish) and Clynelish B (‘Old’ Clynelish) until the owners changed the name to Brora to avoid confusion. In the early seventies Brora started using a heavily peated malt which rivalled most Islay whiskies and for a while it was the peatiest whisky on the mainland’s. Although the Brora is still able to resume production it looks like Diageo have no plans to open this much loved distillery again.
